It has been said by the Ministry of Education that this year is going to be the worst since the Second World War. The last two years (2009-2010 and 2011-2011) about 20.000 school teachers retired while the new who have been recruited so far are only 3.500!
Simultaneously about 2.000 schools have been merged with other bigger schools of 300-400 students or closed completely. It is obvious that they will go on closing more schools.
The number of students per class has increased to 25 students in elementary school and 27-30 students in secondary schools although there have been several cases where the number is much higher due to lack of school buildings. This results in the impediment of the teaching process.
Agencies and institutions subordinate to the Ministry of Education will be forced to stop operating. Likewise, offices of education will be closed (they announced they will close them during the summer of 2011 but they haven't yet. However they didn't send employees to them, and many of such Offices are without staff at all!). The abolition of offices of education has passed some bureaucratic and administrative work to schools where it should be noted there is no administrative staff, but teachers themselves to undertake those tasks!
Remedial teaching (additional teaching support) within schools has also been stopped and remains only in schools where learning problems are critical. In the past, every school could have such programs. This abolition is a major loss for the students which the Ministry seems not to take into account.
The timetables are changing and courses such as computer science or second foreign language options are eliminated! In the first grade of Lyceum, computer science lesson has been abandoned! The purpose of the Ministry is to stop the teaching of computer science in all the 3 grades of Lyceum. It is characteristic that during a week, students in Gymnasium attend computer science courses only 1 hour per week, while the courses of Religious Education is 2 hours per week. In the meantime many other courses are being limited, creating thus a school exclusively exam-centered.
The Minister of Education says that some teachers will be moved or even better will be forced to move from a region of Greece to another because of those schools who have been closed or merged, which led to many teachers without job. The educational community reacts by considering that all this is a way to further cut back on the education budget, which this year is already reduced to 2.75%.
Under these circumstances, schools opened on September 12th this year and it was the first time ever that many schools did not have not even a single book to give to the students.
This is indeed the worst year for Education in Greece, which seems to suffer the most by the financial crisis that our country is going through. And our students are going to be once again the victims.
